It is ... that 的句型，我們以往學到的主要是「強調」功能：
It is John that wrote those letters. 寫那些信的人，正是John（強調「就是」他做
了這件事）。
當然，更不用說一般常見的 It is 形/名 + that 子句: It is great that you're
here. 你來了真好。
但另一個同句型的不同意思，就讓很多人（包括母語人士）跌跤了：
It is ___ that ____. 有否定意味
著名的例子是莎士比亞在《威尼斯商人》裡寫的這句：
It is a wise father that knows his own child.
後來改為較通俗的字眼，變成篇頭的那句諺語： It is a good father that knows his
son.
有人認為是 It takes a wise father to know his own child.

而這個解釋，就接近朱生豪、梁實秋對此句的翻譯：
只有聰明的父親才會知道他自己的兒子。（朱譯）
只有聰明的父親才認識他自己的兒子呢。（梁譯）
但更近代的漢譯，則傾向認為此句型並非「只有....才」的意思，
而是語帶否定地說，「再怎麼....也不」。
例如以下幾句：
It is a good workman that never blunders.
再好的工人，也會犯錯（智者千慮，必有一失）。（出處）
It is a bold mouse that nestles in the cat's ear.
再勇敢的老鼠也不會在貓耳朵裡安家。（做不必要的冒險，算不得真勇敢。）（出處1 出
