The meaning of “Buddha” includes self-enlightenment, enlightening others, an
d perfection in enlightenment. This is called perfection in the three kinds of
enlightenment. Self-enlightenment means that oneself is enlightened; enlighte
ning others comes afterward and is teaching sentient beings to become enlighte
ned. Self-enlightenment belongs to the Two Vehicles, while enlightening others
is cultivating the Bodhisattva Way. Perfection in enlightenment means both se
lf-enlightenment and enlightening others are perfected. In this way, one is a
Buddha replete with the myriad virtues. He has realized the wisdom of the grea
t perfect mirror, the wisdom of equality in nature, the wisdom of wonderful ob
servation, and the wisdom of accomplishing all that is to be done. The Buddha
has perfected the three kinds of enlightenment and realized the four kinds of
wisdom. He has great knowledge and wisdom and thorough understanding of all wo
rldly and transcendental dharmas; thus, he is called the Buddha.
After he had become a Buddha, he wanted everyone to become a Buddha, so he exp
lained the teachings. The Buddha's teachings include the Tripitaka and twelve
divisions. The Tripitaka are the sutras, the vinaya, and the shastras. The twe
lve divisions are prose, verses, predictions, independent teachings, unrequest
ed teachings, causes and conditions, analogies, the Buddha’s past lives, the
past lives of disciples, extensive teachings, unprecedented teachings, and com
mentarial literature. The twelve divisions are not different categories of sut
ras. Every sutra may include these twelve divisions. In studying Buddhism, we
must study the sutras. The sutras are a path to Buddhahood. If we want to beco
me Buddhas, we must follow the path of cultivation. So that's why the Buddha t
aught the sutras, which make up the Buddhist teachings.
