今天跟大家分享增加閱讀自信的一個重要關鍵：「看前後文猜單字的能力」。這個能力，
會直接反應在大家單字題的穩定度。同學有時候做題太快，掉到單字題的陷阱非常可惜。
此外，同學覺得碰上自己不認識的字，就只會用猜的，導致整題答題率不穩定就相當可惜
。今天來跟大家分享用前後文邏輯猜單字的方法，便能很輕鬆的作答。
1. 承接關係
承接關係的意義：上句話與下句話是同等重要。
常見的承接連接詞：and，or，also，as well，other，another...
我們一起來看例題：
But it is a wrong interpretation; fossils are frequently so dense because the
"pores" and other spaces in the bone have become filled with minerals taken up
from the surrounding sediments.
The word "pores" is closest in meaning to which of following?
A. joints
B. tissues
C. lines
D. holes
這題中，考題是pore。我們當作不懂，所以去找附近有沒有明顯的前後文來幫助解題。我
們skim這個句子：因為骨頭中的_____和"其他空間"已經被礦物所填滿。看到有個承接關
係"and"，前後承接了pores和other spaces兩個平行結構，前後相對應，因此pores的意
思在我的心中，是some space的感覺，有了想法再看選項，發現holes與我的想法最接近
，選D！
2. 轉折關係
轉折關係的意義：句子前後語氣態度相反
常見轉折連接詞：but， however，yet，by contrast，on the contrary，in fact，act
ually...
我們一起來看一下例題：
We might expect that early artistic efforts would be crude, but the cave paint
ings of Spain and southern France show a "marked" degree of skill. So do the n
aturalistic paintings on slabs of stone excavated in southern Africa.
The word “ marked ” in the passage is closest in meaning to
A. considerable
B. surprising
C. limited
D. adequate
此題問marked的概念，這題的marked如果不認識的話，看到下一句有個but，我就知道這
兩句的態度語氣就一定會相反，抓crude(簡陋、未修飾的)為線索，在我的心中，我會思
考什麼概念會和crude相反，很可能接近：「多樣的」概念 skim的意思是「法國洞穴壁畫
顯示了多樣的技能」。有了想法再去看答案選項：發現選項中的A，表達了：considerabl
e(相當多的、明顯的技巧)，與我的想法最接近，為正確答案。
3. 舉例關係
舉例關係的意義：抽象到具體解釋的概念
常見的舉例連接詞：for example，such as，for instance，like，including...
我們一起來看例題
Supporting evidence comes from research showing that aggressive people often d
istort other people's motives. For example, they assume that other people mean
them harm when they do not.
The word "distort" in the passage is closest in meaning to
A Mistrust
B Misinterpret
C Criticize
D Resent
一樣，同學不懂distort的話，我們可以看到句子後有個for example在後方解釋，往後Sk
im去找線索：「他們假設其他人有意傷害他們，即使事實上不是這樣。」言下之意，就是
「誤解」了他人，帶著誤解的想法，就可以去選到B選項！
4. 因果關係
因果關係的意義：解釋事物的因果關聯
常見的因果連接詞：
a.原因：for，because，since，as ，due to，owing to，result from 等;
b.結果：so，thus，hence，therefore，so...that, lead to, contribute to, cause,
bring about, generate 等;
我們一起來看例題
In 1815 he published the first modern geological map, “A Map of the Strata of
England and Wales with a Part of Scotland,” a map so "meticulously" research
ed that it can still be used today.
The word “meticulously” in the passage is closest in meaning to
A carefully
B quickly
C frequently
D obviously
這個字我們一樣假設不懂，看到“meticulously” 前後有一個so...that的因果關係(如
此...以至於)，skim後方，意思是：200年前的地圖，現在還能用。那這個字的語氣一定
是正面、地圖非常好用的感覺，帶著「正面語氣的想法」去選，發現只有A選項carefully
(詳細地)的意思最接近，且語氣的方向也是一致的。
做完四題後，大家會發現托福考單字題，都會有線索可以依循去推敲，記得要按照課堂上
所說的，閱讀後要產生自己的想法，再看到答案選項的原則，我相信大家做題會越來越穩
