The Minnesota Twins haven’t been shy about promoting top hitting prospects
such as Miguel Sano, Byron Buxton and Max Kepler from the minors. (With
mixed results.)
Their top pitching prospect … not so much.
However, D. (as in debut) Day is finally at hand for right-hander Jose
Berrios.
Last season, the 21-year-old Berrios (pronounced ba-REE-ohs) posted a
combined 14-5 record at Class AA and AAA with a 2.87 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 9.5
K/9 rate. He was also selected to start the 2015 All-Star Futures Game for
the World team.
In short, he had nothing left to prove in the minors, but the Twins still
sent him back to Class AAA Rochester to start the season. (Service time
manipulation, anyone?) All he did was allow two earned runs in 17 innings and
strike out 20 over three starts.
From there, all it took to get Berrios to the majors was a back injury that's
likely sending Ervin Santana to the disabled list, a comebacker that hit
Tyler Duffey, and poor starts from Kyle Gibson and Tom Milone.
