A six-year deal with Boston in 2009 for $83 million, Lackey’s contract holds
a clause that gave the Red Sox a team option for $500,000 for its final year
if Lackey missed a full season with an injury.
Tommy John surgery took Lackey’s entire 2012 campaign, and now the Cardinals
absorb that contract clause, which Lackey says he plans to honor.
A lot of players talk about wanting to play for a winner. For a 12-year
veteran to play for the league minimum, he must really want to. Lackey says
he will.
“It would have been a harder decision other places for sure,” Lackey said.
“This is definitely somewhere I wanted to be and I’m excited about it.”
Lackey, 35, could conceivably retire before next season to get out of playing
for the MLB equivalent of pennies.
When asked if he would retire in the near future, Lackey chuckled and said, “
I don’t plan on it, no.”
