裡面提到 rather than 在某些情況下，「只能」接動名詞(gerund)，比如
句子時態是過去式或有分詞的情況，導致 rather than 後所接的動詞無法
保持與另一個動詞相同型態。這時「必須」用動名詞 rather than + Ving
而且「不可以」用原形動詞 rather than + V
請問，上面兩道題目，雖然正確答案都是 instead of
是否使用 rather than 也是可以的？
如果都可以，究竟那個比較符合"native"英語使用者的習慣？
目前看到的大部分例句中，似乎當句子為過去式時，用 rather than 是沒問題的
但網路上仍有一些例句，即使是現在式，也一樣用 rather than + Ving
惟網路的例句不見得可靠正確，只能說在平常的使用情況
rather than + Ving 似乎近乎等同於 instead of + Ving
從意思上解讀，rather than 含有偏好 (preference) 的意味
相對地，instead of 則是一種替代 (replacement)

根據上述的細微差異做區分，是否真的合乎英語使用者的習慣？
我感覺老外應該不會想這麼多吧？
如果從含義上分辨，上面兩個題目用 rather than 會比較好嗎？(先不管文法問題)
第一題句尾，還有 even 一字出現，更加強調主詞 young people 做 travel ...
是一種「刻意的」選擇，而不是僅僅一種替換而已。
用中文表示，是「寧可...也不想...」
第二題因為少了上下文，
倘若情境的敘述為一個男孩做錯事了卻拉不下臉向人認錯，還反過來生氣地瞪人
表示該男孩處在「寧可瞪人，也不道歉」的糾結心態，如果是這種情境，
用 rather than + Ving 會比較好嗎？
要什麼樣的情境用 instead of + Ving 會比較合適？

第一題我會覺得都行耶（準備被打臉…）然後你說的從意思上解讀那段，我很贊成。問題是，我還是會覺得兩個都可以…instead of有種暗示“其實他做別的選擇比較好”，rather than比較沒有價值判斷，都可以。我的理解是這樣。

我猜出題老師應該是把than解讀為對等連接詞，所以如果這題要選rather than的話，後面要改成"(to) have children"或"(to) start a family"以對應前面的"to travel"。殊不知rather than也可視為一整組介系詞片語表「而不是」，與instead of相當……
