Hudson-Odoi in Champions League win; first starts handed out
20 SEP 2022
In our latest round-up of loan player action, there has been increased
game time for some of our players in the Football League, but we begin
overseas with the biggest club competition…

Callum Hudson-Odoi played in a Champions League win for Bayer Leverkusen,
their first points won in the group stage courtesy of a 2-0 home success
over Atletico Madrid. Hudson-Odoi caused problems early on for the Spanish
opponents with his runs and cutting inside, but his side's goals came in
the last 10 minutes.

At the weekend in the Bundesliga, Hudson-Odoi started in a more central
position against Werder Bremen and again he took defenders on and again
Leverkusen scored first in the second half, but this time they conceded an
equaliser towards the end, denying them a second league win of the season.
They are 15th in the 18-team table after seven games played.
On Saturday in Italy, Spezia won their second game of the season when they
defeated bottom side Sampdoria 2-1 at home. Ethan Ampadu was in the
victorious defence in what was his second appearance for his new loan club.

An extraordinary long-range goal had put Sampdoria ahead but an own goal
levelled the scores very soon after. Ampadu looked like he might have
scored the winner with a downward header from a cross, only to see the
goalkeeper somehow keep it out with his leg, but a second Spezia goal did
arrive to secure three points.
Having ended a run of five games without win with a victory two weekends
ago, Gabriel Slonina and Chicago Fire have suffered two MLS defeats since,
going down 3-2 in Montreal before losing at home by the same scoreline to
Charlotte FC despite having been 2-0 up. The deciding goal came after six
minutes of added time. The defeat ends Fire's hopes of making the
post-season playoffs for the first time in five years. Goalkeeper Slonina
remains an ever-present in their campaign.
Burnley, making a strong start to their quest for a quick Premier League
return, recorded a draw and a win last week, with Ian Maatsen involved in
both. In a Lancashire derby at Preston, he was a late substitute but he
was brought in at left-back to start a home 2-1 win over Bristol City and
he provided the pass for Burnley to take the lead after only four minutes.

Then, after an equaliser, Maatsen almost re-established the lead with a
shot that was saved, but the winner did come in the second half from a Jay
Rodriguez header.
Burnley are one place below Reading who are in third having recovered from
a heavy home defeat by Sunderland with a win at Wigan. Baba Rahman,
brought on at half-time in the first of those games with his side already
2-0 down, eventually losing 3-0, kept his place and began the weekend
victory. He helped Reading to a clean sheet and a 1-0 win.
In contrast, Huddersfield, who are second from bottom, lost to Wigan. Tino
Anjorin was brought on with his loan side trailing 1-0 but could not turn
the result which ended 2-1. That was last Tuesday but it was a better day
for Huddersfield at the weekend when they won 1-0 at home to Cardiff.
Anjorin was brought into the starting line-up in a central attacking
midfield role and played the first half. He did have the misfortune of
conceding a penalty due to high boot but saw it saved, allowing the
Terriers to keep their early lead until the end.
After a midweek 3-0 defeat for Championship earlier strugglers Hull City,
they brought both Nathan Baxter and Harvey Vale into their starting 11 for
a visit to Swansea at the weekend.

There was a Hull debut for Harvey Vale at the weekend
Unfortunately, the result remained the same but it was both players first
games of the season for Hull, Baxter back at the club where he played last
season. He kept the score down with one save onto the bar, but could not
prevent the Swans second goal after a defensive mix-up
In League One, Peterborough suffered back-to-back 1-0 defeats with Lucas
Bergstrom in goal for both. The second of those defeats was especially
harsh on the young Chelsea keeper who had made two excellent saves before
being beaten in the final five minutes by a heavily deflected shot. Those
results drop the Posh out of the early play-off places.
Another of our goalies on loan in League One, Jamie Cumming, also lost
midweek, when MK Dons were defeated 2-0 when hosting Bolton. He had kept
the game goalless in the first half with a good save but he had a better
day overall on Saturday when his side won 2-1 on the road at Oxford,
moving the Milton Keynes side up to 18th.
Cumming made several saves in that game, the winner proving to be at late
penalty from Will Grigg. Henry Lawrence was an unused sub in both games.
There was a draw and a defeat for Bryan Fiabema and Forest Green Rovers,
leaving them in the bottom four. In the first of those, at Charlton, the
19-year-old Norwegian was handed his first start, playing up from
alongside Conor Wickham who scored in that 1-1 draw, and again at home to
Morecambe on Saturday, but two goals from the visitors followed, including
a winner in the 94th-minute.

In League Two, Sam McCelland helped Barrow keep clean sheets in
back-to-back 2-0 wins for the second-placed side. Doncaster and Newport
were the two teams defeated. Against the first of those the Chelsea
defender had a shot saved.
Joe Haigh made his debut for Derby U21s and scored a fine equaliser
against West Brom, beating several players before finishing, although the
game ended in a 2-1 defeat.
