How different must the other side be
for you to give it up as
too much hassle?
I could have said many mean things,
meaner things,
in that last phone call.
Every seige you find yourself in
is not unique, for I, too,
have been beseiged,
by a different army, with different guns,
and resistance was also not easy.
But now the guns are silent,
and the reporters have all gone home;
the forgetful public has moved on,
and we, too, have been exiled:
with our stories never told,
with truths never pieced together.
Some hearts are never meant to be whole.
