I have spent more than 20 years in education, teaching at both the high school
and college levels. Most recently, I managed an organization whose mission
was to have all of our students accepted to four-year colleges with robust
scholarships.
I have witnessed the college application process from the perspective of the
university while I was teaching at a large university as well as from the
perspective from students and advocates from my time teaching high school and
in my position as the managing director of an organization where we matched
students to colleges. There is a lot of information available for students
who are wishing to attend college. Unfortunately, much of this information
is conflicting.
Colleges want students who they feel will succeed academically, who will have
an impact on their campus, and who will find their “fit” on their campus.

Academics
All students applying to an America college must exceed the academic minimums
set-forth by the college. Additionally, all students interested in attending
an American College must exceed the minimum expectations for the ACT test.
The ACT is offered at ten different locations in Taiwan, three times per year.
Service
Colleges are looking for students who want to make a difference in society and
have already begun volunteering in their communities. There are many different
ways one can serve their community and it is important that potential students
include this information in their applications.
Fit
Colleges are concerned about whether or not a student will fit in at their
institution. Students who have participated in sports, music, visual and
performing arts, as well other similar activities in high school will have an
easier time adjusting to a college if they continue to participate in their
chosen activity while in college.
