Subaru said it is slashing the price of its Subaru EyeSight driver assist
system from $1,295 to $795 on the 2015 Subaru Forester and making it
available on more models of the best-selling car in the automaker's lineup.

A press release from Subaru said Subaru EyeSight was key in earning the 2015
Subaru Forester its 2015 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation. In order to earn
that designation, IIHS says vehicles must have some sort of driver assistance
technology focused on frontal crash prevention. Subaru said the Subaru
EyeSight system incorporates adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking,
and vehicle lane departure warning systems. Subaru EyeSight reportedly uses a
stereo camera technology to provide a detection angle wider than what is
typical in similar radar-based systems — or at least that’s Subaru's take
on it.
As we noted during our test of a pre-production 2014 Subaru Forester XT last
year, the newest generation of the Forester aced the IIHS small overlap
frontal crash test — a test that proves daunting for a good many vehicles,
and especially for compact ones. Subaru’s press release said the new
generation Forester was the first compact SUV to earn IIHS' top rating of
"good" in the small overlap frontal crash test, making it something of a
safety leader in the class.
Furthering Subaru's effort to position itself in my mind as the Japanese
Volvo, the press release said other safety features that debuted on the
new-generation Forester include anti-whiplash front seats, a driver’s knee
airbag, brake override that reportedly cuts engine power if the driver
applies both brake and accelerator beyond a certain threshold, and an
impact-sensing fuel system cutoff. The release said all Subaru Forester
models come with front seat side-impact air bags and side curtain air bags,
intelligent dual-stage deployment frontal air bags, a rollover sensor that
can activate seat belt pre-tensioners and inflate side curtain airbags in the
event of an impending rollover crash impact.
