A Free Digital Society
在數位社會當中有許多對於自由的威脅，包含大規模監控、審查、數位枷鎖、掌控使用者
的非自由軟體、以及對於分享的戰爭，而使用各種網路服務，也漸成另一種的威脅。最終
，我們將不再擁有於網路上做任何事情的權利，而需仰賴大企業所施捨的善意。
本演講非技術性演講，Richard Stallman 博士將討論所有電腦使用者都會受到影響的自
由軟體、所有權與社群、以及數位共容於政治與道德上的各議題。
There are many threats to freedom in the digital society. They include
massive surveillance, censorship, digital handcuffs, nonfree software that
controls users, and the War on Sharing. Other threats come from use of web
services. Finally, we have no positive right to do anything in the Internet;
every activity is precarious, and can continue only as long as companies are
willing to cooperate with it.

自由軟體基金會主席 Richard Stallman 博士在 1983 年開啟了自由軟體運動，並於
1984 年起，開始 GNU 作業系統開發（請參酌 www.gnu.org ）。GNU 是一套自由軟體：
意即不論是否經過修改，任何人都對其擁有複製及再散佈的權力。今日 GNU/Linux 系統
隨時都在數百萬台電腦上運行。Stallman 曾榮獲 ACM Grace Hopper Award、MacArthur
Fellows、EFF Pioneer Award 等獎項，獲頒數個榮譽博士學位及入選網路名人堂。
Dr. Richard Stallman launched the free software movement in 1983 and started
the development of the GNU operating system (see www.gnu.org) in 1984. GNU is
free software: everyone has the freedom to copy it and redistribute it, with
or without changes. The GNU/Linux system, basically the GNU operating system
with Linux added, is used on tens of millions of computers today. Stallman
has received the ACM Grace Hopper Award, a MacArthur Foundation fellowship,
the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Pioneer Award, and the the Takeda Award
for Social/Economic Betterment, as well as several doctorates honoris causa,
and has been inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame.
