紐西蘭導演珍康萍週日於評論家協會獎(CCA)獲得最佳導演獎時上台，她當時表示與大小威廉斯共處一室感到榮幸，接著又感謝其他入圍者(都是男導演)，接著表示：
“I’d also just like to give my love out to my fellow – the guys. And Serena and Venus, you are such marvels. However, you do not play against the guys like I have to.”
意思表示大小威廉斯在球場上不需像她在最佳導演獎一樣，必須與男性一同競爭。
當時台下小威鼓掌，但大威看起來不太自在。(大小威反應我是照衛報用詞)

這段話引起了一些人批評，因此珍康萍稍早週一時公開向大小威道歉：
“I made a thoughtless comment equating what I do in the film world with all that Serena Williams and Venus Williams have achieved. I did not intend to devalue these two legendary Black women and world-class athletes.”
