Roger Federer to skip French Open following Miami Open defeat

Roger Federer won't go for a 21st Grand Slam title at the French Open, with th
e 36-year-old Swiss great saying on Saturday he'll skip the clay-court season.
Federer confirmed the plan after falling 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) to Australian qua
lifier Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round of the Miami Masters.
"I decided not to play the clay season," said Federer, who won his 20th Grand
Slam tournament at the Australian Open in January, but will lose the world num
ber one ranking to Rafael Nadal after his shock defeat.

In press conference just a few minutes after his loss to Thanasi Kokkinakis in
the third set tie-break at the Miami Open, Roger Federer announced that he wo
n't play the Roland Garros for the third year in a row, and will skip the whol
e clay-season. 'I decided not to play the clay-season.
I didn't play great last week too. I am trying to figure things out, now I hav
e some time. It was important returning to n.1 in Rotterdam, keeping it now or
getting it back within the season is not important', said Federer.
The 36-year-old is set to make his return to the competition in Halle on grass
that starts on June 18. But he may play Stuttgart the previous week like he d
id in 2016 and 2017.
'I'm a positive thinker, every match is another opportunity', he added. 'Disap
pointed I couldn't find a way. He was just a bit better than me today. He was
more relaxed, I deserve losing the n.1 after today, it was so bad!I was in sea
rch-mode the whole match.

k.'
Nadal will have to defend 4,680 points on clay, and Federer can still comeback
on the throne again without playing.
