Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell noted on Friday that the baseline outlook and the shifting balance of risks to inflation "may warrant adjusting our policy stance," indicating loosely that the bank could cut its interest rates soon.
Speaking at the Jackson Hole Symposium, Powell noted that the shifting balance of risks followed lower inflation, despite it remaining "somewhat elevated," and the labor market being "near maximum employment." Still, he warned that "in the near term, risks to inflation are tilted to the upside, and risks to employment to the downside — a challenging situation." "When our goals are in tension like this, our framework calls for us to balance both sides of our dual mandate," he noted, reaffirming the Fed's
commitment to a data-driven approach to future monetary policy decisions.
