A child usually learns to tie their shoes around the time they go to
school. And once they learn, it is something they will not forget. However,
if the child's mother comes to the rescue each time the child's shoe
becomes untied, the child will never learn. The same can be said for what
we learn on an emotional level. You may be trying to save someone from an
emotional lesson - but the sooner they experience it without your
intervention, the sooner they will be able to manage it without help. And
once they get there, they'll be stronger for it.
