Nathan EovaldiNATHAN EOVALDI’S ELBOW
When did the injury happen?
Eovaldi had Tommy John surgery in high school, and he said this issue feels
completely different. He was feeling no pain and no discomfort until after
his start on Saturday. Throughout that game, he never felt quite right. Not
specifically in his elbow, just overall. He felt his mechanics weren’t quite
right. His body felt tight. It was the next day that his elbow began to feel
unusually sore. Eovaldi elected not to play catch that day, hoping some rest
would let his elbow calm down. When it lingered on Monday, Eovaldi texted
Steve Donohue and went for an MRI.
What exactly is going on with the elbow?
Right now, the Yankees are calling the injury nothing more serious than
inflammation. Eovaldi said he was specifically told the ligament is fine. “I
’m relieved that it’s just elbow inflammation and that everything is fine
with the ligament and stuff,” Eovaldi said. “But it just sucks because of
the timing of it. I just feel like it’s the worst timing it could be. We’ll
just play it by ear. I got a PRP injection yesterday to help speed up the
recovery hopefully and we’ll play it by ear.”
What caused it?
Several factors to consider with Eovaldi. He threw quite a few more innings
in 2014 than he had in 2013 (which is usually a red flag). His newest pitch
is a splitfinger (which is notorious for be hard on a pitcher’s elbow). He
throws very hard (which could cause problems if things are out of whack). The
Yankees can’t definitively say what caused the issue, but Eovaldi thinks it
all stems from feeling not-quite-right in his last start. “I feel like it’s
mechanical because my chest, shoulder, elbow, they were all sore,” Eovaldi
said. “Larry (Rothschild) said he felt like I was standing up and not
finishing my pitches. I felt like my timing was off. So the combination of
the two, putting more pressure on my arm, I’m a power pitcher and (adding)
all the extra pressure on to it is a bad combination.”
How long will he be out?
The plan is for Eovaldi to do nothing for two weeks. After that, he’ll have
to be built up again. That means a throwing program and the usual progression
(you’re probably familiar with the basics by now). It’s possible the team
will have to use Eovaldi as a reliever if/when he gets back. Brian Cashman
said he’s just hoping to have “I would think it would probably be difficult
to see him pitch before the season’s over, yeah,” Girardi said. “Maybe he
could get in a game, but we don’t have a lot of time.”

Adam WarrenIMPACT ON THE YANKEES’ PITCHING STAFF
Who takes Eovaldi’s place in the rotation?
Cashman and Girardi mentioned both Adam Warren and Bryan Mitchell as
candidates, but Cashman essentially acknowledged that he’s expecting Warren
to rejoin the rotation. “You can start him, he just might not go very far
(into the game),” Girardi said. “The plan is to start him whether he gets
two or three innings.”
How does this change the rotation against Toronto?
That seems legitimately up in the air. CC Sabathia starts tomorrow, then Luis
Severino on Thursday. Beyond that, the rotation is TBA. The Yankees could
simply pitch Ivan Nova, Michael Pineda and Mashahiro Tanaka through the
weekend, but that would mean pitching Tanaka on normal rest in the series
finale against the Blue Jays. “Sure (facing the Blue Jays this weekend)
factors into it,” Girardi said. “But what you do what is you want them at
their best. No matter when they’re pitching. So if you feel that they can be
on their best on normal rest, then we’ll do it. And if they need an extra
day, then we’ll do that.”
So when is Warren going to make his first start?
Again, that’s up in the air. For now, the Yankees recognize Warren is a big
part of the bullpen, and they want to have that weapon available if
necessary. “It could be something on a weekly basis we’ll look at based on
off days, based on what’s available to us, how games go,” Cashman said. “
We could put a plan in place like I talked about — hey, we’ll use Warren
(or) we’ll use Mitchell — but then if Joe sniffs a win a few days before
that, it doesn’t mean you’re not going to see Warren or Mitchell or
whatever (out of the bullpen).”
Any chance of acquiring someone just to make a few September starts?
In theory, the Yankees could trade for someone just to make a spot start or
two, but Cashman said that’s unlikely. “What you’re seeing is what we’ve
got,” he said. “I think that’s the best way to move forward on it. If we
do something, it would be surprising from my end.”

Brett GardnerBRETT GARDNER’S SHOULDER
So this is why he’s missed two straight games?
Gardner hasn’t felt quite right since slamming into the wall making a catch
this weekend. He got an injection yesterday then naturally sat out against a
lefty. He’s getting another day off against today’s right-hander, but
Cashman said it’s possible he could be used at some point, The problem is in
his left shoulder. “He’s available, I think, today as a player if we so
choose,” Cashman said. “But when you do those, you like to give him two
days. I think he’s available off the bench and he should be back in there by
tomorrow.”
Does this explain why he’s struggled recently?
Probably not. While Girardi said yesterday that Gardner’s been “beat up”
for a while, this shoulder issue is pretty new. It’s not connected to
roughly a month of poor results. “It has not been going on very long,”
Girardi said. “But he revealed he was sore on Sunday, so, I gave him
yesterday off, I’m giving him today off. He does feel much better today than
he did yesterday.”
Why Chris Young to replace him?
Girardi wasn’t asked about this — other issues were obvious priorities —
but I can look at numbers and make an educated guess. While Girardi could
have used lefty Dustin Ackley in left field, Orioles starter Kevin Gausman
actually has pretty significant reverse splits. Lefties are hitting
.240/.289/.395 against him. Righties are hitting .274/.314/.535. Not saying
that would have been enough for me to start Young (who’s been pretty bad
against right-handers), but I assume that factored into Girardi’s decision.

Mark TeixeiraMARK TEIXEIRA’S BONE BRUISE
This thing is still going on?
Yep, and it doesn’t seem to be getting much better. “I do wonder (if he’s
lost for the season),” Cashman said. “Again, first and foremost, it’s been
a long time and he’s still having issues. Again, I can’t predict what’s
going to happen here. There is a lot of time left, in terms of between now
and the end of the season. I just don’t know. I just can’t predict.”
What exactly is the problem?
Still described as a bad bone bruise, Teixeira is apparently feeling
never-related issues up and down his leg. “(He) got a couple of more
injections to try to calm the nerve down, because he’s still feeling nerve
issues up and down his leg when he puts pressure on the leg,” Cashman said.
“He’s still got crutches. … He received a few more injections to try to
assist in calming the nerve down. We’ll wait it out. No guarantees.”
1. Eovaldi
2. Mark Teixeria
3. Brett Gardner
Cashman
4. Rotation
Warren
We will see
