The junior circuit is a place one can usually spot some of the up and coming
stars of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, and attaining the No.1 junior ranking is
usually an even bigger sign of things to come. Arantxa Rus of The Netherlands
recently ascended to the No.1 spot in the juniors and now has her sights set on
the big leagues; find out a little bit about the 17-year-old in the latest
Getting To Know on sonyericssonwtatour.com.
Tell us a bit about your upbringing.
I was born in Delft but now I live in Monster. I've always lived with my
parents and sister. When I was five years old my sister brought me along to our
local tennis club and I started to play for fun, but I started taking it
seriously after a little while. I finished high school last year so now I can
focus on tennis much more. My sister and mother still play tennis too.
(Delft專門出產青少女世界第一 :D Misa也是)
Who are you being coached by?
I began practicing with the Dutch tennis federation when I was 14 or 15, and
have been working with Hugo Akkar and Addi Bank ever since.
What is your game style?
I'm a lefty with a two-handed backhand, and I play with lots of spin. I like my
backhand more, but I like both of my groundstrokes. I have a good serve too;
sometimes I win a lot of points with my serve. And I prefer to play on clay.
(左手持拍, 喜歡打紅土^^)
How is the transition from juniors to the Tour going?
I've done well in the juniors. I won my first Grand Slam at the Australian Open
this year and made the final in doubles too. I do enjoy playing doubles,
especially when it's with another Dutch girl. But the competition is a lot
different in juniors. In my first two Tour events, at 's-Hertogenbosch last
year and this year, the players want to win every single point and just don't
let up. You have to do so well every point. In the juniors, if you're up a set
they sometimes don't believe they can win anymore. The level of competition is
much different overall.
(從青少女到職業的轉換 兩種賽事有很大的不同)
What are your greatest tennis memories so far?
Definitely winning the girls' title at the Australian Open this year, but I
also won a $25,000 ITF Women's Circuit title in Italy a few months ago too,
which was great. I'm playing another $25,000 in Belgium next week and I got a
wildcard into a $100,000 in Luxembourg this summer too. By the end of the year
I hope to be in the Top 200, so I can play qualifying for Tour events and Grand
Slams.
