2025-11-11 18:05:26Draymond Green is the epitome of the evolution of how big men in the NBA play
today. Although he stands only 6’6〃, the power forward plays with a
ferocity and tenacity that make him one of the most feared defenders in the
league.
In addition, he’s also an adept playmaker, capable of grabbing a rebound and
initiating the offense himself, finding his favorite target, Steph Curry, or
any teammate for that matter, on the perimeter or inside for easy buckets.
Another thing that Dray is known for is his willingness to mix it up with
anyone on the court. Whether it’s LeBron James, Domantas Sabonis or Santi
Aldama, he never hesitates to make his presence felt, whether it’s through a
physical altercation or some good, old verbal warfare.
However, former All-Star and renowned tough guy Charles Oakley doesn’t
believe Dray’s style of play would have allowed him to thrive in the
previous era, asserting that an opponent would simply have taken him out to
shut him up.
First off, Oak speculated that in an era marked by unchecked physicality and
leniency on fouls, Green would have had a tougher time asserting himself as
the big dog in the yard, primarily because there were so many other big dogs
that would have been more than happy to take him down a peg or two.
“All that trash-talking and fighting he be doing on the court, that wouldn’
t fly in the ’90s,” Oak stated. “No. No. No. No. No. He’d have been just
like Barkley — somebody would’ve hit him in the mouth. No, it wouldn’t
have worked.”
Secondly, Oakley added that Green’s passing skills wouldn’t have been as
effective, as NBA teams played a more plodding style that relied more on
post-play and isolation actions, rather than the fast-paced, off-the-ball
movement offenses of today.
“The ’90s style didn’t fit his game. He’s more of like a dribble-handoff
guy, pin-down — everybody running, you know, pin-down for Curry, all this
Oakley revealed that he tried to watch the NBA Playoffs series between the
Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets and admitted he didn’t last
long, especially when he saw Alperen Sengun routinely get bullied by Green.and
that,” he explained. “It would’ve been different.”
“Ain’t no tough guys in the league. These seven-footers in the league now
they all soft. You know, when a 6’7〃 guy can check themself and be
consistent, get into him or whatever, they don’t fight him,” Oak assessed.
“You know, every time Draymond checked him, he just shot a fadeaway. He was
scared.”
