greatest-of-all-time debate during a question-and-answer session with fans at
the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation's 11th annual All-Access Event in Dodger
Stadium on August 28th.
In what did not come as a surprise, Johnson picked his 1992 Olympic teammate
Michael Jordan as the basketball GOAT, putting MJ ahead of two Lakers
all-time greats, while also affirming that legendary Celtics figure Bill
Russell should be included in the conversation.
"We haven't seen anybody do the things that Michael could do," said Magic.
"He was physically so gifted, at the same time, smart. And then we have two
other Lakers following him right after that, and that would be LeBron and
Kareem. But Michael, I would say. And then you have to throw in Bill Russell
in there cuz 11 championships, you can't deny that. They go back and forth in
today's world, Michael and LeBron, and that's okay." Johnson played Jordan 18
times during their storied basketball careers, with MJ owning an 11-7 record
against Buck. Michael averaged 30.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 8.1 assists, and
2.4 steals per game in those 18 meetings, displaying his dominance against
the Showtime Lakers. Meanwhile, Magic put up 19.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 11.6
assists and 1.1 steals per night against Mike.
While Johnson spent most of his career having Boston Celtics legend Larry
Bird as his rival, Magic faced Michael and his Chicago Bulls in the 1991 NBA
Finals. The Bulls dominated that championship series, beating the Lakers 4-1
to win the first of six NBA titles under MJ's watch.
"I still remember that shot that he did against us in '91, when he went up
with the right hand, tongue out, and we went for it. So he watched us go
down, switched the ball from his right to the left, tongue went left, and he
spun it against the glass and good. Still the greatest shot I've ever seen.
So I'll take Michael," Magic added.
