The Mavericks traded back into the 2022 NBA draft to select Jaden Hardy. Here are five things to know about the newest Mav:

2. Already a pro
Instead of going the traditional route, Hardy followed the new trend of highly-touted prospects signing to play professionally out of high school in the G-League. Last season Hardy played for the G-League Ignite team and averaged 17.7 points per game, 3.2 assists and 4.6 rebounds.
“He’s been a scorer his whole life,” Mavs GM Nico Harrison said about Hardy on draft night. “But I think when you take a kid that doesn’t go to college and tries the G League Ignite and is playing with older, more mature people and see him develop … it just shows you what he can become.”

3. Highly-touted
Coming out of Coronado High School in Henderson, Nev., Hardy was an elite recruit.
Ranked as the No. 4 overall prospect in the 2021 class by 247Sports, he slotted in behind top-ranked Chet Holmgren (who was just selected by Oklahoma City with the No. 2 pick in the draft), Paulo Banchero (selected first overall by the Magic) and Shaedon Sharpe (No. 7 overall to Portland).
Hardy received offers from over a dozen schools including Arizona, Georgetown, Kentucky and Memphis before ultimately opting for the G-League route.
Hardy’s 247 scouting report compared him to Bradley Beal and labeled Hardy as the best offensive player in the class of ‘21.

4. Basketball fam
Hardy comes from a pretty rich lineage of hoopers.
Hardy’s brother, Amauri, played college basketball for UNLV and Oregon. He’s played with his brother in the pros, too, also suiting up for the NBA G-League’s Ignite team.
Hardy’s father, Ramsey, played college ball for Tuskegee and helped coach Jaden and Amauri as they grew up.

5. Why the fall?
Though his counting stats look impressive and led Hardy to an appearance in the Rising Stars game, his efficiency numbers tell the story of how he fell from five-star recruit to a second-round pick in one year.
Playing in 12 G-League games during the 2021-22 season, Hardy shot just 35.1% from the field, and 26.9% from 3-point range. That includes a 2-for-15 stretch from beyond the arc in the last three games that he played. His true shooting % was .479.
There are still believers in Hardy’s shot, though.
