Grizzlies coach J.B. Bickerstaff blasts referees: Mike Conley doesn't get
respect

MEMPHIS — With the Memphis Grizzlies trailing by one point with 2:30
remaining in an eventual 112-103 loss to the Boston Celtics on Saturday
night, Mike Conley found himself in a favorable matchup.

A pick-and-roll with Marc Gasol forced Boston big man Al Horford to switch

basketball suddenly squirted away into the arms of Kyrie Irving, who started

to redirect Bickerstaff's frustrations as he spoke with reporters after the
game.

"We didn't play perfect, but that's a huge missed call," Bickerstaff said.

Bickerstaff referred to Conley's inability to draw whistles as a "running
theme."

"Mike Conley is one of the class acts in the NBA," Bickerstaff said. "He
deserves the respect of the officials. Time and time again, he drives to the
basket, there's contact made, but there's no whistle. He doesn't complain. He
doesn't get technical fouls, but for whatever reason he doesn't get the
respect that I feel like some of these other guys at his level do."

Overall poor offense by the Grizzlies and a late-game spurt led by Irving and
hot 3-point shooting from the Celtics helped Boston (21-14) come back from a
19-point deficit against Memphis (18-17). Bickerstaff noted his team's poor
perimeter defense in the second half, calling the Celtics' 44 percent clip
from 3-point range "the difference" in the game.

Bickerstaff said the no-call on Conley's drive "changes the momentum of the
game at that point."

baits the defender. They slap him on his arm. We don't get the call."

Conley offered a more measured response in his postgame remarks, but did say
"there was a missed call" and added that "nothing has changed" since former

fashion.

Bickerstaff's diatribe on Saturday came without catchy one-liners. But he
made his point clear.

"We’ve gone through the process of sending in clips and talking to the
officiating crew," Bickerstaff said. "We’ve brought it to their attention,

to be aware of, but I think he deserves that respect. He’s too classy a guy
to show out or disrespect people. He won’t do that, but it’s our
responsibility to make sure we’re protecting him.
