“Rick is our Jerry Sloan,” Mavs president of basketball operations Donnie
Nelson proclaimed after the team’s first-round playoff exit. “I think he’s
one of the top coaches in the league, if not the top coach. We’re blessed
and lucky to have him. He can be in Dallas as long as he wants to be.”

Carlisle certainly has a ways to go in order to catch Sloan, who coached one
team longer than anyone else in league history while leading Utah for 22 1/2
straight seasons. Sloan also led the Jazz to 15 consecutive playoff
appearances from 1989–2003, becoming one of just six coaches to eclipse the
1,000-win plateau for his career in the process.

before coming to Dallas, Carlisle has amassed a 619-431 record for his
career. With that said, he’s seen his most success while leading the Mavs,
capturing his 600th career win with a 93-72 victory in Miami on Jan. 30.

And after leading the franchise to its first-ever title during the ’10-11
campaign, Carlisle confesses that it’s hard to see himself coaching anywhere
else.

That doesn’t happen at just anywhere you go. I appreciate (Nelson’s)
sentiment. The feeling is mutual, and so we’ll go from here.”
