million) are at the top of the Nets’ asset chart, and any team that finds
itself in that situation is going to be in some trouble. The Nets are in some
trouble, especially because they will swap draft picks with the Hawks this
year, lose their picks to Boston next year and in 2018 and be subject to a
swap in 2017. As for the other Nets players, they’re tough to measure.

The real points of interest here are center Brook Lopez and forward . Each
has a contract option that they can exercise this summer, allowing them to
his free unrestricted agency. But neither case is simple, and there is
genuine uncertainty about what either player will do. Lopez’s option is
worth $16.8 million, and given his recent history of injury, particularly
when it comes to his foot, opting out and netting a big contract as soon as
possible is the wise thing to do. But Lopez could come back next year, play
out his option, (hopefully) stay healthy and look like an All-Star qtqin,
setting him up for an enormous payday in the summer of 2016, when the league’
s new TV deal kicks in.

Young has the same situation, a choice between getting paid now and getting
paid in 2016. But Young’s option number ($9.7 million) is much smaller than
Lopez’s, and in terms of a “ceiling” for salary in Young’s free agency, it
’s not going to top what a max deal would be worth this summer. That means
there won’t be as much incentive for Young to wait before opting out. Either
way, the Nets, with so few options when it comes to changing over their
roster, appear to want to keep both Young and Lopez.

first-round picks in their next four seasons, and will likely have to swap
the other two for lower picks.
The best they can hope for at No. 29 this year is to take a chance on a
high-risk, high-reward gamble, like Kansas' Cliff Alexander.

Their list will depend on what happens with their three big free agents
(Mirza Teletovic, in addition to Young and Lopez). Beyond that, the Nets need
serious veterans who can do what Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett could not —
push Deron Williams into becoming something remotely close to the All-Star
point guard he was in Utah. They’ll also need players who better fit Lionel
Hollins’ slow, suffocating style of play. It’s not a surprise that the Nets
ranked 24th in pace this season, but if you’re going to play that slow, you
need to rebound and defend. The Nets were 24th in defensive efficiency and
23rd in rebounding percentage.
