Pierce thinks about the Clippers
He's ready to join Clippers, if Celtics waive him
I've touched on the notion of LAC/KG/Pierce dating back to midseason - I've
heard Pierce, if let out of contract, may have interest in LAC. There have
been signals that Pierce, 36, would not be back with the Celtics as the team
looks to build for the future.
One Eastern Conference general manager told Sporting News, “From what I
understand, the guys in (Pierce’s) camp are readying for free agency.”
That would obviously have an impact on Rivers’decision to return. He does
have three years left on his deal, but he also has an understanding with
the team that he is free to walk away at any point in the offseason.
That has been the case each of the last two years. Further complicating
matters is the status of 37-year-old Kevin Garnett. There is a chance that
Garnett could retire, especially if Pierce leaves the Celtics.
If both Pierce and Rivers leave Boston and Garnett wants to continue playing,
he would waive his no-trade clause and look for a deal to a small number of
teams. Either way, that could be a boost to the Celtics. Boston would either
get Garnett’s contract off the books or bring in young players in a trade.
