Phillies, Indians have discussed Bauer trade

July 24: The Indians' success since the start of June has made it more
unlikely that the club will move Trevor Bauer before the Trade Deadline, but
Cleveland is apparently still fielding offers for the right-hander.
Sources told MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi that the Indians have discussed a
Bauer trade with the Phillies, even though general manager Matt Klentak on
Tuesday downplayed the chances of Philadelphia making a blockbuster deal.
Bauer is under control through 2020, so Philadelphia would be able to slot
him into its rotation alongside Aaron Nola next year in addition to
benefiting from his presence this season. The Phils are just a half-game
behind the Cardinals for the second National League Wild Card spot.
Bauer's expected salary in his final year of arbitration (potentially around
$20 million) has been mentioned as a possible deterrent for some suitors, but
that's less of a concern for the deep-pocketed Phillies.

July 24: The Mets seemingly added their closer of the present and future when
they acquired Edwin Diaz along with Robinson Cano from the Mariners in a
blockbuster trade last December, as the reliever is under control through
2022. But less than eight months later, New York is willing to listen to
offers for the 25-year-old right-hander, according to MLB.com's Anthony
DiComo, confirming news initially reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan.
The Mets' asking price for Diaz appears to be prohibitive, however,
especially given Diaz's struggles this season. One executive told Passan that
the team is asking for more than it gave up to get Diaz.
The full deal with Seattle saw New York pick up Diaz and Cano for Jarred
Kelenic, Justin Dunn, Gerson Bautista, Jay Bruce and Anthony Swarzak. The M's
also sent the Mets $20 million to cover part of the $120 million remaining on
Cano's contract, which runs through 2023. Kelenic and Dunn were the big
prizes for the Mariners, as both are ranked among MLB Pipeline's Top 100
prospects (Kelenic 22nd and Dunn 65th).
According to Passan, the club's willingness to deal Diaz so soon after the
trade doesn't mean it necessarily wants to move on from him. Rather, the Mets
are exploring all avenues to improve their roster.
Why J.D. is unlikely to be moved
July 24: Red Sox manager Alex Cora admitted Monday that a swoon leading up to
the Trade Deadline on July 31 could convince Boston's front office to sell,
rather than try to add pieces. The Sox are in the midst of a pivotal 14-game
stretch in which they'll play nobody but the Rays and Yankees.
But with a win in its first two games of a three-game set at Tropicana Field,
Boston is now tied with Tampa Bay for second place in the American League
East and only two games out in the race for the second AL Wild Card spot.
A sale by the reigning World Series champions is looking unlikely, and even
if the club did opt to go in that direction, there aren't many players it
would make available. Core assets such as Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts,
Rafael Devers, Andrew Benintendi and Chris Sale aren't going anywhere, and
it's doubtful other teams will be interested in taking on the money still
owed to David Price ($96 million over 2020-22) and Nathan Eovaldi ($51
million over 2020-22).
Free-agent-to-be Rick Porcello and center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr.
(controllable through 2020) are possible trade candidates, but both players
have struggled this season.

There's also slugger J.D. Martinez, who can opt out of the remaining three
years and $62.5 million on his deal after this season. Red Sox president of
baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has indicated that he doesn't expect the
team to negotiate a new contract with Martinez.
However, MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal listed several reasons why
Martinez is unlikely to be traded in a story for The Athletic (subscription
required) on Wednesday. As Rosenthal notes, it's not a given that Martinez
will actually opt out, which could deter National League clubs from targeting
him. Martinez will be 35 by the end of his deal, and NL teams would be forced
to play him in the outfield, with no DH spot available.
Martinez is a better fit in the AL, but most of the Junior Circuit's top
contenders are more focused on pitching, and the teams seeking a bat
