Detroit Tigers' Cameron Maybin out 4-6 weeks with wrist fracture
The injury bug bit Cameron Maybin again.
First, the Detroit Tigers outfielder came into camp with a sore shoulder
after slipping on ice. Then, he was hit on the left wrist in his first at-bat
of the spring. Now, he will be sidelined for at least a month.
Maybin’s CT scan this morning in Tiger Town showed a non-displaced hairline
fracture of the left wrist. He will be out 4-6 weeks, Tigers manager Brad
Ausmus said after today’s game against the Atlanta Braves.
“He says he feels pretty good,” Ausmus said.
But the CT scan, which was termed precautionary hours earlier, showed
otherwise.
Maybin, who was competing for playing time with Anthony Gose – the two
figured to share at least a platoon role in centerfield, with the former
playing against left-handed pitchers and the latter playing against righties
– joined the team this off-season in a trade with the Braves.
Asked if he could play with it, Ausmus said, “Right now, that wouldn’t make
any sense.”
Maybin, 28, hit .267 with 10 home runs, 59 RBIs and 23 stolen bases in 141
games with the Braves last season. He is a career .251 hitter in nine seasons.
The injury means Gose is in line to be the team’s Opening Day starter.
Ausmus said Tyler Collins – who has experience in centerfield – is a likely
candidate to serve as a backup and utilitymen Mike Aviles and Andrew Romine
can be emergency options at the position.
“Generally, that means 4-6 weeks for it to heal before you start
participating in baseball activities,” Ausmus said.
Maybin will undergo follow-up X-rays in two weeks.
“Every team deals with it,” Ausmus said. “As a player, you learn to deal
with it. It’s part of the game, you move forward and you hope whoever player
is back in the allotted time schedule and ready to go.”
