"I made a mistake, I'm embarrassed," Washington said Wednesday at a news conference in Irving, Texas. "I was not true to my wife of 42 years. I broke her trust." Washington, who spoke publicly for the first time since his Sept. 5 resignation, did not take questions. He asked that his privacy be respected and revealed that "today I'm at a very low time in my life." Washington and his wife, Gerry, were married on Sept. 16, 1972. He apologized to those he disappointed including his players, the Texas Rangers organization and Major League Baseball. Washington, 62, cited a non-specific personal matter when he resigned, releasing a statement through the team that read, in part, " As painful as it is, stepping away from the game is what's best for me and my family." Bench coach Tim Bogar was named interim manager.
