Mets Injury Update: Matt Harvey scheduled for mound session Tuesday
The New York Mets fell to 53-58 on the season following a 9-0 loss to the San
Francisco Giants. The Mets managed just two hits off Madison Bumgarner, who
struck out 10 and earned his 13th win of the season. The Mets staff which is
10th in the Major Leagues in ERA, allowed nine earned runs on 11 hits,including
four home runs. On the injury front, pitcher Matt Harvey is scheduled to throw
a bullpen session tomorrow.
I reported on July 31 that Harvey, who is out for the season following Tommy
John surgery last fall, is improving and was set to throw off the mound on
Friday.
An update on Harvey, as reported by Zach Braziller of the New York Post, is
that Harvey did not throw from the mound, but threw 20 pitches from the slope
of the bullpen mound Friday afternoon at Citi Field. He's now expected to
throw 25 pitches off a mound at the team's minor-league complex on Tuesday.
Harvey wants to pitch in a game for the Mets before the season ends, while
general manager Sandy Alderson said that it's possible Harvey could pitch in
the instructional league and Arizona Fall League. The timetable for recovery
from the surgery is generally 10 to 14 months which takes Harvey to around the
beginning of September at the very earliest.
Harvey was excellent last season for the Mets, going 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA. In
178 1/3 innings, he allowed only 135 hits, walked 31 and struck out 191. In two
Major League seasons, Harvey has a record of 12-10 with a 2.39 ERA and 261
strikeouts in 237 2/3 innings.
