Source: Phillies re-sign Cole Hamels to megadeal

Cole Hamels and the Phillies have agreed in principle to a six-year contract
that will make him the richest player in team history, according to a source.
The 28-year-old former World Series MVP will sign a six-year, $144 million
deal that reportedly has a vesting option for a seventh year. In all, the
total package could be worth $160 million, according to USA Today. An
agreement was originally reported by FOXSports.com.

It is the second-largest contract ever signed by a pitcher, eclipsed only by
CC Sabathia's $161 million deal once signed with the New York Yankees. Had
Hamels waited two months and reached free agency, he likely would have
surpassed Sabathia's deal. Instead, he signed the most lucrative contract
ever for a Philadelphia athlete.

The deal is expected to be formally announced later this morning at Citizens
Bank Park during a news conference.

Both sides were increasingly optimistic about a pact being struck once the
Phillies agreed to guarantee six years. Long-term negotiations never
intensified until within the last month, once the July 31 trade deadline

wondered aloud what it would be like to test free agency. He signs this deal
as the Phillies teeter on the edge of relevancy, buoyed by three straight
dramatic victories.

The deal was brought to Hamels following his start Saturday and the
lefthander considered the proposal for a few days. A source said Tuesday

Milwaukee, 7-6, Hamels said yes to the terms.

The Phillies have invested $68 million in three starting pitchers for 2013.

player, Chase Utley.

In other words, the Phillies may be far from finished in making moves. One
goal could be to clear enough salary in 2012 to dip under the luxury tax
limit of $178 million so the team can eclipse it in 2013. There are punitive
penalties for repeat tax offenders, and the Phillies have maintained they
will not pay it.
It could be unavoidable in 2013 with the current payroll commitments.
