The HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine and the flu vaccine have been reported
to affect menstrual cycles temporarily
"Menstrual changes are very common, and even before vaccination, almost four o
ut of ten young women reported that they had experienced such changes.
Many women reported heavier periods than normal after the first and second vac
cine dose:
7.6 per cent reported heavier periods before vaccination
13.6 per cent reported heavier periods after the first dose
8.2 per cent reported heavier periods before the second dose
15.3 per cent reported heavier periods after the second dose
"Most menstrual changes after the first dose were transient. On average, they
returned to their normal levels by the time of vaccination with the second dos
e, approximately two to three months after the first dose.
Limitations?
The responses in the study are based on self-reported data. It is conceivable
that women who experienced menstrual changes after the first dose were concern
ed and thus more likely to report this also after the second dose, compared wi
th women who did not experience menstrual disorders after the first dose. Ther
e has been a lot of media attention around the signals that have come after co
ronavirus vaccination, which may have also氲ontributed濳o more women reporting
menstrual changes after vaccination, even if they have previously experienced
similar episodes without vaccination.?
We included 3,959 individuals (vaccinated 2,403; unvaccinated 1,556). Most of
the vaccinated cohort received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (55%) (Moderna 35%,
Johnson & Johnson/Janssen 7%). Overall, COVID-19 vaccine was associated with
a less than 1-day change in cycle length for both vaccine-dose cycles compared
with prevaccine cycles (first dose 0.71 day-increase, 98.75% CI 0.47–0.94; s
econd dose 0.91, 98.75% CI 0.63–1.19); unvaccinated individuals saw no signif
icant change compared with three baseline cycles (cycle four 0.07, 98.75% CI
0.22 to 0.35; cycle five 0.12, 98.75% CI 0.15 to 0.39). In adjusted models
, the difference in change in cycle length between the vaccinated and unvaccin
ated cohorts was less than 1 day for both doses (difference in change: first d
ose 0.64 days, 98.75% CI 0.27–1.01; second dose 0.79 days, 98.75% CI 0.40–1.
18). Change in menses length was not associated with vaccination.
