about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black
races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of
negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white
people”

當南方表示想要脫離合眾國, 一名林肯的幕僚表示不如就讓南方聯盟國和平脫離
林肯這麼回答了: “Let the South go? Where, then, would we get our revenue!”
＂讓南方脫離？那麼，我們的稅金要從哪來！＂
而南方為什麼想脫離？

“Every man should endeavor to understand the meaning of subjugation before
it is too late…
It means the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy;
that our youth will
be trained by Northern schoolteachers; will learn from Northern school books
their version of the war;
will be impressed by the influences of history and education to regard our
gallant dead as traitors,
and our maimed veterans as fit objects for derision… It is said slavery is
all we are fighting for,
and if we give it up we give up all. Even if this were true, which we deny,
slavery is not all our enemies
