ELTA retains Rio 2016 rights in Chinese Taipei in Dentsu-brokered deal

Chinese Taipei's ELTA Technology Co, the privately-owned digital media
company, has retained broadcast rights in the country to the Rio 2016 Olympic
Games, Sportcal can reveal.
In a deal struck with Dentsu, the Japanese advertising giant, ELTA has
acquired the rights across all broadcast platforms, including free-to-air
television, subscription television, radio, internet and mobile phone.
It can broadcast and/or sub-licence the rights within Chinese Taipei.
ELTA also held the broadcast rights in Chinese Taipei to the Sochi 2014,
London 2012 and Vancouver 2010 Olympics, as well as all three editions of the
summer and winter Youth Olympic Games to date.
Sally Chen, chief executive of ELTA, said: "We are delighted to have acquired
the rights for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. As the official broadcaster in
Chinese Taipei since 2008, ELTA has achieved new goals and accomplishments
within our industry. As the digital age keeps evolving at lightning speed, we
will always create new and innovative services to enhance our viewers’
experience of the Olympic Games."
Dentsu acquired so-called ‘gatekeeper’ broadcast rights for Sochi 2014 and
Rio 2016 from the International Olympic Committee for 17 Asian countries
almost two years ago.
As well as Chinese Taipei, the deal also covered: Afghanistan; Brunei;
Cambodia; East Timor; Hong Kong; Indonesia; Iran; Laos; Malaysia; Mongolia;
Myanmar; Papua New Guinea; Philippines; Singapore; Thailand and Vietnam.
Dentsu had earlier been awarded the broadcast rights in Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, marking the first time
that the agency had been appointed to market Olympic media rights.
