In the New Meeting Place, 國王飯店 , our ever-intellectual senior Blisser, Kevin Ting, arrived earlier and proceeded the meeting more fruitfully than expected.
“Xenophobia”
“Xenophobia” is an innate hatred toward foreigners or immigrants, regarding them as intruders, potential advantage-takers, horror-makers, burden-carriers, etc., the mindset of which is deliberately hidden among native adults but shown abruptly rude among the teenagers
Examples of “Xenophobia”
1. Hilter’s Holocaust to Jews in early 19th century;
2. British News describing Irish as low-raced criminals;
3. Asian-faced people are usually taken as low-educated law-breakers.
Unfair discrimination
1.Some participants said it existed when Asian-faced people role-taking shifted from cash-distributors to business competitors.
2.Others said it never happened when getting lost in Europe but receiving warm help from them.
Anti-immigration attitudes in the US:
1. Defined Irish as “Foreign devils” filthy equally as lowest Blacks
2. In 1800s, Italian immigrants menaced in strip cartoons as “Italitanos”
3. Humiliate “Mexicans” to shove it as lowly-paid workers.
4. In 1963, Africa-Americans were racially segregated.
5.“Forced Acculturation” banning Middle-Eastern headscarves from imperiling public schools
6.“Social Exclusion” segregated in “ghettos”, a breeding bed for crimes.
2016 Global Peace Index:
Terrorist-victimized Zone-covers Russia, Turkey, North Korean, etc., excluding Taiwan. What a relief!
Refugees’ problems
Many refugees died on the way while fleeing from Syria and Africa. When staying illegally in the host countries, they were vulnerable to sexual exploitation, labor abuse, and unfairly discriminating employment while lacking shelters, lawful protection, medical care, food and some others, sometimes enduring the traumatic split with family members. To pursue better lives, they need to apply for legal asylum in the host country.
