Season 3 of NBC’s deliciously dark drama jumps ahead eight months
as the search for on-the-lam cannibal Hannibal Lecter(Mads Mikkelsen)
kicks into high gear. Thehunt shifts the perspective from erstwhile
FBI profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) to the Bad Doctor, a switch executive
producer Bryan Fuller is stoked about.
“I feel like a baton got passed in the last couple of episodes last season,
so this is a natural evolution of the story,” he says.
Hannibal has escaped with former therapist Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian
Anderson) and is chowing his way through Florence with gusto while dealing
with the heartbreak, as he sees it, of Will’s betrayal.
“Now that Will has fully exposed [him to the FBI],”Fuller says,
“he has no reason to hide his brutality.” But Lecter isn’t the only villain
hungry for evil this season.

Francis Dolarhyde (Richard Armitage):
The second half of the season focuses on Lecter creator Thomas Harris’s
novel Red Dragon, with Armitage playing a serial killer who falls in love
with a blind woman (True Blood’s Rutina Wesley). But the story is more than
just a catch-the-badguy tale:
“We see him struggle with his insanity and lose that battle,” Fuller says.
“You see a man in pain, trying to make sense of it all, and you feel bad
for him. But then he’s also killing children.”
Neal Frank (Zachary Quinto):
A dead Neal appears in a flashback early in the season. He pops up again later,
also in a flashback, as a patient of Bedelia’s. But he’s not just any
patient—he’s the one she killed in self-defense and whose murder
Hannibal helped cover up.
Says Fuller:
“Her whole world changed with that guy.”
Mason Verger (Joe Anderson):
Anderson replaces Michael Pitt, who left the series last season,
as the almost cartoonishly evil young hog magnate. Mason is seeking revenge
against Hannibal for making him cut most of his face off.
“Everybody is plotting,” warns Fuller, “but him above all.”
