Chelsea Here Chelsea There: First Leverkusen goal for Hudson-Odoi and
scoring return by Lukaku
31 OCT 2022
In our latest round-up of the action involving Chelsea players on loan,
Callum Hudson-Odoi and Romelu Lukaku both scored significant goals in the
Champions League, while there were some impressive goalkeeping
performances closer to home in England...

Callum Hudson-Odoi found the net for the first time for Bayer Leverkusen
in a dramatic Champions League tie with Atletico Madrid. In an
entertaining match, Hudson-Odoi put Leverkusen 2-1 up just before the
half-hour mark, with his deflected shot beating the goalkeeper after
Atletico had given the ball away at the back.

However, the Spaniards equalised in the second half and a dramatic ending
saw VAR award them a penalty after the final whistle, which was then
saved, keeping Leverkusen's chances of a Europa League spot alive.

Hudson-Odoi then came off the bench away at Leipzig in the Bundesliga on
Saturday, as Leverkusen succumbed to a 2-0 defeat.
Romelu Lukaku scored on his return from injury for Inter Milan. The
striker came off the bench in their Champions League group game at home
against Viktoria Plzen for his first appearance since August, and put the
icing on the cake in an emphatic victory.

It took the Belgian just four minutes to get his name on the scoresheet
after being introduced late on, combining well with Joaquin Correa before
finishing clinically to make the final score 4-0, a result which secured
Inter's place in the last 16. Lukaku then continued his comeback by
featuring for the last 20 minutes of their 3-0 win over Sampdoria in Serie
A, making his 100th appearance for the club.

A pair of late winning goals saw Ian Maatsen and Burnley go top of the
Championship table by making it five victories in their last six games.
First they hosted Norwich City in an even game last Tuesday, which was
decided in their favour by an 82nd-minute penalty. The Clarets were at
home again over the weekend, beating a Reading side featuring fellow
Chelsea loanee Baba Rahman 2-1, thanks a dramatic goal in the fourth
minute of added time.
An impressive performance by Nathan Baxter wasn't enough for Hull City to
prevent high-flying Blackburn Rovers recording their fourth consecutive
win in the Championship. Baxter did well to deny Ben Brereton Diaz twice
from close range and Sam Gallagher one-on-one with excellent saves, but in
reality it was merely damage limitation, as Hull rarely threatened an
equaliser after Blackburn had taken a first-half lead, seeing out a 1-0
win in comfort.

Lucas Bergstrom produced some important saves as Peterborough secured two
home wins in a week to maintain their promotion push in League One. First
the Posh had to come from behind against Accrington Stanley to win 3-1,
with Bergstrom producing a brilliant stop to turn a close-range header
onto the crossbar with his side leading by one.

Peterborough then hosted fierce rivals Cambridge United in the first
league derby between the two sides in 21 years. The home side were gifted
a narrow 1-0 lead when a corner bounced in off a defender's shoulder and
managed to hold it until the end, but they had Bergstrom to thank for
beating away a Jack Taylor shot after his defenders had given the ball
away in a dangerous area.

Goalkeeper Jamie Cumming and defender Henry Lawrence helped MK Dons keep
back-to-back clean sheets. The first came in a big upset, when MK Dons
ended their run of five straight league defeats by beating a Charlton
Athletic side unbeaten in five 2-0, helped out by a second-half red card
and penalty. The second was less eventful, with a 0-0 draw away at
Cheltenham Town, the highlight being a fine low save by Cumming to secure
that clean sheet.
Bryan Fiabema started for Forest Green Rovers as they secured a point away
at Fleetwood, in a 1-1 draw, but was powerless to prevent them succumbing
to a 2-0 defeat in their first-ever meeting with Barnsley, after coming
off the bench for the last 20 minutes.
Jayden Wareham made his first league start for Leyton Orient and came
close to opening the scoring as they hosted Gillingham in League Two. His
effort only found the side-netting but they triumphed 2-0 regardless,
making it 11 wins in a row to remain a point clear at the top of the table.
Ethan Ampadu thought he had set up a crucial equaliser for Spezia, but was
hugely unlucky to end up on the losing side as they were beaten 2-1 by
Fiorentina. The Welsh international knocked down a Kevin Agudelo cross for
Gyasi Nzola to smash in a deserved goal from close range, after Spezia had
been denied by a string of saves from the Fiorentina keeper. However, a
VAR intervention to change a booking to a red card for Dimitrios Nikolaou
saw Spezia reduced to 10 men before Fiorentina scored a last-minute winner
from a rebound after a double-deflection and save.

Malang Sarr started for Monaco against Angers over the weekend, as they
shifted to a back three, but was withdrawn at half-time in a tactical
reshuffle before the home side went on to win the game 2-0 with a pair of
second-half goals.
