It is Chelsea Football Club's birthday, and to mark the occasion, the
official website visited the museum at Stamford Bridge for a look at a
special item produced to mark our founding…

One hundred and thirteen years ago this evening, a press release from the
JE Dixon Sports News Agency brought tidings of great joy: a new football
club for London had been formed, and its name would be Chelsea.

Dixon's was reporting from a meeting upstairs at the Rising Sun pub, now
the Butcher's Hook. The publican at the time was Edwin Janes, and he would
sit on the new board of the football club, along with his uncle Alfred
Janes, Brompton whipmaker George Schomberg, shipping clerk and chairman
Claude Kirby, owner of The Dell stadium George Thomas, Henry Boyer, his
brothers-in-law and fellow building contractors Joseph and Gus Mears –
the owner of Stamford Bridge – and the Mears company's draughtsman and
surveyor, Tom Kinton.

Kinton was the man most responsible for ensuring architect Archibald
Leitch's grandstand and the huge banked terraces rising at Stamford Bridge
in 1905 were fit for purpose; it is also his founders' medallion that is
on show at the Chelsea FC Museum, as seen in the video above.

These medals were struck for all founding directors, and feature the newly
granted coat of arms of the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea – although
the club has always been based in Fulham.

The club badge is a slightly different take. The rampant lion, first worn
on Chelsea shirts in the 1960s, is actually derived from the coat of arms
of the Cadogan family, as Lord Cadogan was Chelsea's first club president.
The crozier it holds represents the Bishop of Westminster, whose diocese
covers Chelsea.
而俱樂部勛章則不太一樣。後腳站立的的獅子圖案在1960年代首次被印在切爾西的隊

To mark our founders' day, Kirby's modern day successor, Bruce Buck, will
be laying a wreath at Gus Mears' grave before the Crystal Palace match.
