Epic Exclusivity is something that has been a very controversial topic in the
recent days. Many fans have been against Epic Store’s business strategy of
grabbing timed exclusives to increase the exposure of their Store. Amidst all
that, a report revealed by Digital Bros, parent company of 505 Games, Digital
Bros, parent company of 505 Games, reveals that Epic Store paid 9.49 million
euros for Control Exclusivity
The breakdown shows the revenue from various platforms as of 30th June 2019.
The revenue from Epic shows as 9.49 million euros and considering Control wasn
’t released till then, so likely all revenue came from Epic. Pre-orders
might account for some of the revenue, but, considering Xbox and PS4 had
pre-orders as well but their revenue shows as zero, consolidates the fact
that pre-orders were not taken into account. This is evident from the second
breakdown which can be found below. Control accounts for the whole 9.49M
Euros coming from Epic Store, and, considering that the numbers from Epic
Store and Control revenue matches, we can say that the revenue from PS and
Xbox till then was zero. 55% of the amount went to 505 games. The full
document can be accessed here.
The article also states that the revenue generated was due to the exclusivity
contract explicitly. The translated quote states, “The game in different
versions, for personal computers and consoles, was launched on the 27th
August 2019, but the contractual structure with the digital marketplace that
required the exclusivity of the video game of the personal computer version
has allowed the recognition of revenues already starting from this exercise.”
