Mike Trout is back.
The Angels star was activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Friday’s
series opener in Cleveland. Outfielder Matthew Lugo was optioned to Triple-A
Salt Lake on Thursday as the corresponding move.
Trout is in the lineup, batting fifth and starting at designated hitter in
his first game back.
Placed on the IL on May 2 (retroactive to May 1) with a bone bruise in his
left knee, Trout had progressed to lightly running the bases on Tuesday and
facing live pitching on Wednesday. He has evidently checked all the boxes
toward a return after missing the Angels’ past 26 games.
Trout was hitting just .179 with a .726 OPS at the time he landed on the IL,
although he had nine homers in just 29 games. He injured his twice surgically
repaired knee April 30 with an awkward step on first base at T-Mobile Park in
Seattle.
If he can stay on the field, Trout provides a major reinforcement for an
Angels team that has lost five straight games after winning eight in a row.
He will be another big bat in a lineup led by shortstop Zach Neto and catcher
Logan O’Hoppe.
Los Angeles will enter Friday with a 25-30 record, good for fourth place in
the American League West.
