Yoenis Cespedes is reportedly returning to New York. The free-agent
outfielder agreed to a three-year deal with the Mets late Friday evening,
according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.
MLB Network's Ken Rosenthal reported that the contract's value was in the
neighborhood of $75 million and includes an opt-out after the first year,
allowing Cespedes to re-enter free agency after the 2016 season. The Mets
have not confirmed the deal.
Cespedes was said to be mulling a long-term offer from the Nationals, and
late Friday evening reports surfaced that a third team had entered the mix.
The Orioles also previously made an offer before re-signing Chris Davis on a
seven-year, $161 million deal.
Cespedes was among the the top remaining free agents in a year that featured
a rich crop of available outfield talent. Alex Gordon, Justin Upton, Jason
Heyward and Dexter Fowler also hit the open market this winter. Of that
group, only Fowler remains unsigned.
The Mets acquired Cespedes from the Tigers at the July 31 non-waiver Trade
Deadline last year. The 30-year-old outfielder batted .287 with 17 homers in
57 games with New York, helping the club reach the World Series.
He's a career .271/.319/.486 hitter with 106 home runs over four seasons with
the A's, Red Sox, Tigers and Mets.
