各位前輩好，由於版上土木/水利PhD的文章很少，且小弟的背景十分多元，各個領域都有
嘗試過，故想問版上的大大請大家幫忙看大概落點會在哪裡，並詢問土木/水利近年在國
外的發展狀況(去年申請時有跟國外的教授聊，說美國最近花大筆的鈔票砸在土木領域上)
。
雖然今年想申請2024 Fall的 Civil Engineering (CE) / Hydraulic Engineering / Coa
stal Engineering 博士，但想說都到美國了，仍想輔修CS或做跟CS有關的研究，目標是
畢業後留在國外工作並且拿身分。
現在在某國內老字號營造廠擔任現場工程師，專業領域為:海岸工程的數據/圖像分析、感
測器(RPi、Arduino)應用於土木領域、以及決策分析；熟悉Python、Matlab、qgis和GEE
，也熟悉機器學習。

主要:NCSU, UFlorida, PennState, UCI, Northeastern, UDelware
主要還是按照USNEWS來排序的，加上國外做海岸工程的名校又甚少，故以UMich和CMU為最
想要去的兩所(以可輔修CS作考量的話)。
另外，其實我也有申請2023FALL的Program，雖然有收到NCSU、UFlorida和UDelware的全
額獎學金，但因教授都為助理教授就拒絕了，而Penn State也有開出(flow measurement+
ML)的邀約，雖然很心動但考量當時的選校策略失誤，故決定再戰2024就忍痛放棄了。
也想請問版上，有沒有仍在國外奮鬥的土木/水利奮鬥的學長姐，亦或已經業界上班或者
轉型至CS領域成功的學長姐們；當然，除了美國外，荷蘭的大學包括University of Twen
te和TU Delft也都有再觀望，希望版上的大大們能給我一點亮光指引方向。

I’m already working in the US and strongly recommend you not to study PhD in civil. I can sense that you have intention to pivot into CS, so stop wasting your time in civil and just apply for MSCS. Get out of school as soon as possible and land a software job. I got my MS in civil and took a coupleof CS class, also trying to break into tech. Butdue to visa and the lack of training in CS compared to average CS grads, I’ve sacrificed so much time and effort and still don’t know whether I’d success. So think twice. I’d only recommend PhD ifacademic is your passion, otherwise, getting MSCSis a no brainer, even if it takes extra 1-2 years. Another thing is, H1B is becoming harder and harder to acquire, so there’s that.Most civil companies in the US are also obsolete and old, and those that integrate new technology don’t pay that well either, your years put into civil would not worth it at all, financially.

土木phd只有一個目的：EB1或NIW，除非你想教書你應該現在就開始讀OMSCS，浪費很多時間了不要聽台灣業界學長姐話唬爛，土木要留下很困難的你還想搞marine這種非常niche的，基本在找死你又想轉CS又嫌老闆AP，你轉CS誰會在乎你老闆是AP還是P你去年就該接了offer趕快出來，看不懂你到底在幹嘛BTW最近東岸在搞離岸風電，沒看到團隊簡歷裡有phd
