Hironobu Sakaguchi says the name Final Fantasy came from Square wanting to call the game "FF" in short. The original name they wanted to call it was "Fighting Fantasy" but due to trademarks they couldn't use that so they reluctantly went with "Final Fantasy" as a last resort!
